Osteoid: combination of health and technology

It is a protective tutor that could replace the old plaster in fractures realized through the use of a 3D printer. Osteoid is a thermoplastic, non-toxic, non-deformable and of course 100% customizable “glove”, which can be connected to an low intensity ultrasonic generator LIPUS  able to reduce the time to healing of the bone fracture by up to 80% . This time we’re not talking about laser surgery or doctors robot but a tool apparently less sensational but which in reality is likely to mark a new stage in the history of going to replace the good old plaster. Osteoid won the first prize of the A-Design Award & Competition: invented after four months of study in Izmir, Turkey, from a young local designer, Deniz Karasahin, which was awarded for the enormous amount of technology, functionality and also design contained in the product.

PROJECT

The objective is to improve the overall experience of healing for the broken or fractured limbs, concentrating on the patient comfort (a stable environment and protective) and quality for the body, reducing the time required to heal themselves. The casts on carrier facilitate ventilation reduces itching and can smell bad, because unlike chalk, osteoid does not limit patient exposure to water. Osteoid offers a new way to deal with problems related to the period of immobility of the affected fracture limb, through the introduction of new technologies that guarantee full comfort, since they are built and custom-molded. Osteoid also benefits from the properties of the materials with which it was designed: thinner, lighter, water-resistant and environmentally friendly. Osteoid can also be combined with the system LIPUS: stimulator of bone ultrasound at low intensity. For single daily sessions lasting about 20 minutes, the system LIPUS promises to reduce the healing process by up to 38%.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION

So Osteoid can adapt perfectly to the limb of the patient was used modern technology of printed 3D, going through the body scanner to scan the affected area. The data, detected by the scan, are transferred to a modeling software that will determine the size and geometry according to the medical situation, and calculate weight, density, and the clamping point. In order to maintain the same “design language” the system stimulator marrow LIPUS is also produced by means of the 3D printer.

Becomes clear at this point that the challenge for the designer was mainly to build a protective mechanism for the sufferer causing the graft generator LIPUS was not invasive but also practical, combining in a single product the beneficial properties of low emission of ultrasound – which studies and medical research in the case of fractures have proven to have a significant regenerative effect – and the protection of new generation, different from the chalk. Ultimately it is clear that reduced recovery time and greater convenience in handling the difficulties arising from the care of fractures, enclosed in osteoid, represent a mix that, we hope, could revolutionize the industry.
